How to Report Identity Theft

Act quickly — the sooner you report, the less damage can be done. Take these steps in order.

1. Place a Fraud Alert and Freeze Your Credit

   Contact any one of the three bureaus to place a fraud alert — they're required to notify the other two. Then place a credit freeze with all three: Equifax (1-800-685-1111), Experian (1-888-397-3742), TransUnion (1-888-909-8872). Both are free.

2. Report the Theft to the FTC

   Go to IdentityTheft.gov and file a report. The site generates a personalized recovery plan and creates an official Identity Theft Report you'll need for disputed accounts.

3. Contact Your Financial Institutions

   Call the fraud department of your bank, credit card companies, and any other financial institutions. Report unauthorized transactions. Change passwords, enable 2FA, and request new account numbers if necessary.

4. File a Report with Local Police

   Request a copy of the police report — creditors often require it when disputing fraudulent accounts. Bring your FTC Identity Theft Report, government-issued ID, and documentation of any fraudulent activity.
